What is Habitat for Humanity of Morrison County?
We are a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to
eliminate poverty housing, and to make decent shelter a matter of
conscience and action. We are serving God, Building homes
and Building Community. Habitat invites people from all
walks of life to work together in partnership to build houses with
families in need. Habitat has built more than 300,000 homes
around the world.
What does HFHMC do, and how does it work?
It is not a charity or give-away program. HFHMC builds houses in
partnership with Morrison County families in need. Volunteer
labor helps keep building costs low. Partner families pay a down
payment, and monthly mortgage payments. They also invest 300
hours of their own labor or “sweat equity” into building
their home, and the homes of others. As homeowners pay their
mortgages, the money goes into a revolving loan fund that helps build
Habitat homes in partnership with other Morrison County families.
How are partner families selected?
We accept applications year round from families who have currently
lived in Morrison County for at least one year. Our family
relations committee reviews the applications and recommends families
based on: 1) their need for adequate housing, 2) willingness to partner
with Habitat, 3) ability to repay the no-interest mortgage, and 4) they
must be between 25% to 60% of the average income for Morrison County
based on our income guidelines.
How much does it cost to build a Habitat house?
It costs between $60,000 and $80,000 to build a house here in Morrison
County. They are affordable to low-income families because there
is no profit included in the sale of the house;
and no interest is charged on the mortgage. The mortgages are
financed over 20-30\ years.
How does HFHMC get money to build houses?
We have fundraisers throughout the county: Century 21 New
Horizons Realty golf tournament, Ladies Spring Luncheon,
annual Cash Raffle, and Pizza Night. Donations are received from
churches by sponsoring a special dinner, or collection, a
“Habitat Sunday”. We also receive donations from
businesses, corporations (paint, door hardware, etc.) organizations
(Lions Clubs, etc.) and individuals. We do not accept government
money, nor do we participate in government programs.
How can I become involved?
