Aging in Place

What is Aging in Place?

Aging in Place is a program that partners with people age 62 or older to make improvements to the safety, accessibility, or energy efficiency of the home.

The goal of the Aging in Place program is to not only enable people to age safely in their homes but also to create an environment where older adults can continue to learn and contribute, develop relationships with people of all ages, maintain a healthy lifestyle, live independently, and receive community-based healthcare and support services. At the end of the day, a livable community for older adults is a livable community for everyone.

What kind of projects qualify?

The program focuses on making necessary, critical improvements to the safety and accessibility of the home. All of the work is tailored to the needs and desires of the individual and together, the homeowners and Habitat staff will decide on work to be completed, keeping in mind budget considerations. Work may include installation of adaptive equipment such as grab bars, railings, shower chairs, stair gates, ramps, lever door handles, raised toilets. We are also able to consider larger structural projects such as moving laundry to the main floor, converting existing tubs into walk-in showers, and widening doorways, or projects to improve efficiency and reduce energy costs such as repairing roofing and adding insulation.

Who does the work?

The Habitat office will coordinate the work with trained volunteers and/or local contractors.

What is the cost?

HFHMC currently has grant funding from Statewide Affordable Housing Aid to cover the costs of approved projects.
